The group consists of Hayate (Knight of Wind), Sasame (Knight of Sound), Goh (Knight of Fire), Kei (Knight of Light), Mannen (Knight of Ice), Hajime (Knight of Water), and Shin (Knight of Plants). The knights explain that Takako (or Fenrir), the 'Princess of Calamity', or 'Princess of Disaster' in the ADV translations, escaped and sent demon larvae (monster worms in Odex translations) to Himeno's town, and that the Leafe, which the larvae are absorbing, is the energy for all life itself. The only way to destroy the demons is for Himeno to become the Prétear and fight them alongside the Leafe Knights.

In the present day, Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura, heirs of the Hazama clan, became the kekkaishi protecting the land and the power. They use a technique called Kekkai, a form of magical barrier, used to capture and destroy Ayakashi (monsters/demons) that are drawn to this land. Any demons that come near to the power will become stronger and therefore Yoshimori and Tokine are to guard the land from intrusion by the Ayakashi.
But the demons form a powerful organization, led by a nine-tailed demon fox to take over that mysterious power. Yoshimori plans to destroy not only the demons, but also the power to completely save the world from being controlled by demons. To do that, he first needs to know what the power actually is, and also strengthen his poor kekkai skills.

Literally translated, it means one knight who is the match for a thousand (other knights) (the character "ki", for "knight" does not translate directly, as knights in the Western mold were unknown in Japan, but the sense is the same). The destinies of those who wear the magatama gems, though, have repeated time and time again for the past eighteen centuries—without fail—and the carnage is immense each time around.

Then Kiriya approaches her when he realizes that she reads a book called Blue, a book by a photographer named Yuuji. Karin is uneasy about the advances and starts to leave when the bus stops at the stop for Seika Girls' Academy, which is Karin's high school. Karin drops her book, and Kiriya inadvertently lifts Karin's skirt when he tries to give her book back. The skirt-lifting, combined with the fact that Kiriya still has his camera in his hand, causes Karin to think that Kiriya is "upskirting" her. Karin hits Kiriya and leaves without her book.

Despite his outward appearances, Kintaro is an incredibly clever and resourceful individual, and consistently exceeds what the women in his encounters thought possible, winning their hearts despite his outward awkwardness. But due to chance, necessity or a sense of honor, Kintaro never takes advantage of these newfound feelings.

Ares, Michael, and Baroona are admitted to the Tample Mercenaries through a simple test of skill against rank B soldiers. After passing the test with ease, they enter the same unit in the Mercenary Corp, and intrigued by each others’ skill, they soon became friends. They also met the fourth member of their group, the cowardly artist Gohue, who hides during battle, but is great at drawing. The three warriors soon prove themselves on their first mission, and rise to Rank B (though all three are far better than the Rank A soldiers). The Tample Mercenaries soon get involved in battles on a national scale, where the main characters meet the great Chronosian general (and later king) Icarus. Impressed by their skills, he hires them on another mission to protect him while he goes to attempt to negotiate his way out of a war with Chronos’ western neighbors, the Radink Alliance. The trio’s help is needed when two generals use Icarus’ absence to overthrow the government of Chronos and use Chronosian soldiers to attempt to kill him. After Ares, Baroona, and Michael see Icarus safely back to his own troops, the Tample Mercenaries are hired to stop the usurpation of the throne by defeating the usurper’s army. Though pure genius, Icarus wins the civil war with minimal losses to either side, and then takes both armies to defend Chronos' western border. The former King’s advisors request that Icarus be the new king, and he accepts their offer. In this battle, Icarus once again uses the Tample Mercenaries and brilliant strategy to provide an advantage to his side. Soon, the black knights were all defeated and the presumed red eyes swordsman escaped. Ares and Michael took chase and was astonished to find out that he was not the red eyes swordsman, but his brother. Red eyes swordsman soon appeared and revealed himself to Ares to make him stronger.

The Secret story arc starts in Japanese volume 6 of Gacha Gacha. It revolves around a malfunction at the Gacha Gacha virtual reality video game, which has since gone retail after the events in the Capsule story arc. The malfunction leaves the main character, an unlucky young man named Akira, transforming into a young girl whenever he sneezes. The body is the tutorial character's body which he was interacting with when the Gacha Gacha game crashed. He later finds out that eating Natto (fermented soybeans) would transform the girl form into a taller and much more buxom form.
Akira uses his newfound body to learn more about women, specifically getting closer and improving his relationship with the girl he is infatuated with.

Despite its repeated use of slapstick comedy, the story sometimes touches on more mature themes such as sexuality and at one point even rape.
Another thing to mention is that compared to Kawashita's popular Ichigo 100%, the genders have seemingly interchanged. Where as the main plot to Ichigo 100% was several girls aiming for one boy, in Akane-chan Overdrive, several guys (and Akane's female best friend) all seem to be attracted to her (or her body, at least).
Though very ecchi at times, Akane-chan Overdrive contains more shōjo elements than Kawashita's later works.

The series' protagonist, Kimihiro Watanuki (四月一日 君尋 , Watanuki Kimihiro?), is a high school student who is continually plagued by supernatural monsters (youkai) and spirits which are magically attracted to him. The creatures are invisible to all but him, and as a result he feels extremely burdened by them. When he quite literally stumbles into a shop that grants wishes, his life changes drastically.
Within the shop is the seductively beautiful Yūko Ichihara (壱原 侑子, Ichihara Yūko?), a witch of many names and esoteric renown. The seemingly all-knowing witch soon gets down to business: she offers to grant Watanuki's wish to be rid of his ability to see spirits. However, a price equal to the power required to grant the wish must be paid. Yūko discovers that Watanuki is very skilled with his hands and a hard worker. As a result, Watanuki soon finds himself forced to perform housework and odd jobs for Yūko until he has done enough work for his wish to be granted.
